Brian Keith Derks was born in Fremont, Michigan, on July 12, 1984, to Peggy and Keith Derks. He was the younger of two children, having an older sister, Sallly.

Growing up he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and computers. His dream was to become a computer programmer technician. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially during summer vacations and on holidays. Brian had a sense of humor that kept everyone laughing.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and attended White Cloud Public Schools. Highlights of his school years include the Boy Scouts, where he received their highest award as an Eagle Scout, Quiz Bowl, National Honor Society and playing baseball and football. Brian was a kind and caring person and loved helping others. He graduated from White Cloud High School in May 2003. His loyalties were to God, his family and friends and to his country. Upon graduation from high school Brian enlisted in the United States Army.

In March 2004, after having completed basic training, Brian was assigned to Fox Troop, Second Squadron, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, known as the Blackhorse, at Fort Irwin, California. In February 2005, after months of training with the Blackhorse Regiment, Brian was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 13 August 2005, while engaged in combat operations, SPC Brian K. Derks made the ultimate sacrifice when he was hit by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Baghdad.

Specialist Brian Keith Derks’ awards and decorations include; the Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
