Major Gerald M. Bloomfield, II was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 15, 1966. He grew up in Fowlerville, Michigan and graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1984. He attended Eastern Michigan University and graduated with a degree in Math and Physics. In 1991 he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant after having completed Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. Following completion of The Basic School, Major Bloomfield was assigned to primary flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator March 1992.

In June 1994, Major Bloomfield completed initial AH-1W training at HMT-303 and reported to MHLA-267, Camp Pendleton, CA and served with that unit from June 1994 to March 1998. From February 1995 through May 1995 he was temporarily assigned to HMM-262, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Okinawa, Japan. From October 1996 through April 1997 Major Bloomfield deployed with MHLA-267 in support of the Unit Deployment Program, Okinawa, Japan. In March 1998, Major Bloomfield attended the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, CA, and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Electronic Engineering. In June 2000, Major Bloomfield was transferred to MCTSSA began his assignment as a Designator Officer from August 2000 to March 2003.

While Assigned to MCTSSA, Major Bloomfield was temporarily assigned as the Communications Officer for I Marine Expeditionary Force, G-6, Camp Pendleton CA from January to March 2003. In April 2003, Major Bloomfield reported to HMT-303 for refresher training. Upon completion he reported for duty with Combined Forces Air Component Commander in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In July 2003, Major Bloomfield was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369 and served as the Department of Safety and Standardization Officer, where he deployed in support of the Unit Deployment Program, Okinawa, Japan. From September 2004 to May 2005, Major Bloomfield served as the Executive Officer of Marine Wing Support Squadron 372.

In May 2005, Major Bloomfield was assigned to HMLA-369, Camp Pendleton, CA, where he served as the Quality Assurance Officer. In August 2005, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On November 2, 2005, Major Bloomfield and co-pilot Captain Michael Martino would be killed when their AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter crashed while flying in support of security and stabilization operations near Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Major Bloomfield’s military decorations include: The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, The Air Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device “V”, Strike/Flight Air Medal with Numeral “1”, the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, The Air Force Commendation Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Global War on Terror Service Medal.

Major Bloomfield was married to Julie Gill, February 9, 2004 in Oahu, Hawaii. He has a son Ryan (13) and two step children Chelsea (18) and Tony (15).
